3D Scanning, Reverse Engineering & 3D Printing

From an existing part to a digital model and a new version. Röllin Racing combines 3D scanning, reverse engineering and 3D printing for motorsport, bodywork and vehicle projects. We capture existing shapes, reconstruct the required geometry and prepare it for printing and further manufacturing.

This is particularly useful for parts that are no longer available: a rare wide arch, a special cover or a custom fitting piece need not be held back by the lack of a replacement. Together we define the result you need – a digital model, a fit-check prototype or a printed component.

3D scanning: digitising the original

An existing part is the starting point. We capture its surface and add important interface and installation dimensions. For larger body panels, individual scan areas are combined into a single model.

Before scanning, we assess size, surface condition and accessibility. The intended use is equally important: a pattern model requires different details from a component with precisely defined mounting points. Required dimensions and tolerances are agreed for each project.

Reverse engineering: turning a shape into a usable model

Reverse engineering develops the captured shape into an engineered design. We reconstruct the geometry required for your project, taking account of mountings, mating surfaces and requested changes. Missing or damaged areas are reconstructed using the available references and measurements.

Need a different width, extra clearance or a modified mounting? Such adjustments are planned in the model before manufacturing. We agree the scope and output format of digital data in the quotation.

3D printing: fit-check prototypes, parts and patterns for lightweight construction

The prepared model leads to the next step in your project. We print prototypes for checking fit on the vehicle, custom parts, and models and patterns for further processing.

Material, wall construction and print orientation depend on function, temperature and loading. Larger shapes can be divided into coordinated segments and assembled afterwards. For a subsequent carbon or GRP component, we plan the print as the basis for further mould-making or lamination.

Typical projects

  • Rare bodywork parts: digitising existing Group 5 wide arches and other hard-to-find shapes and preparing them for reproduction.
  • Custom vehicle parts: covers, trim, air ducts and fitting pieces based on a template or agreed design.
  • Prototypes and fit checks: checking shape, available space and interfaces on the vehicle before final manufacturing.
  • Foundations for carbon and GRP: printed models, master patterns and segmented moulds for further processing.

From your enquiry to the result

  1. Show us the reference: Send us photos, approximate dimensions and a description of the part. Mention any existing sketches or 3D data in your enquiry.
  2. Define the goal: We clarify the requested changes, installation conditions, quantity and required services – scanning, design, printing or the complete process.
  3. Agree the scope and costs: You receive a project-specific quotation setting out the agreed results and planned process.
  4. Produce and check the fit: We start work after your approval. Where a fit check is planned, its results are incorporated before final production.

For functional parts, we define loads and operating limits before design. Swiss road-use requirements and any necessary supporting documents are included in project planning.
